Relocation of Greymouth Family Health Centre to Rural Academic General Practice

Greymouth Family Health Centre Logo

Greymouth Family Health Centre is to relocate to the new Rural Academic General Practice when it opens on the Grey Base Hospital site on Monday 13th September.

Despite considerable efforts the Greymouth Family Health Centre has been unable to recruit a permanent general practitioner to replace Dr Weston. Small practices in rural areas across New Zealand, such as the Greymouth Family Health Centre, have been finding it increasingly difficult to recruit GPs, as GPs are tending to opt for the greater collegial support that typically is available in larger, multi-doctor medical centres.

This change does not by any means solve the problem of the shortage of GPs that Greymouth is currently facing, but it is anticipated that, in time, it is more likely to assist in recruiting GPs to replace those who have recently retired or left.

For patients of Greymouth Family Health Centre this relocation means they will still be enrolled in a local practice and have access to medical and nursing staff there.

Dr Greville Wood and Registrars Dr Amir Khan and Dr Anu Shinnamon from the Rural Academic General Practice have been providing medical services at the Greymouth Family Health Centre since July 2010 and will continue to do so but will be based at the Academic General Practice.

The Rural Academic Practice provides further post graduate training for graduate doctors, nurse specialists and allied health staff to prepare them for specialised roles in a rural setting while also providing full primary practice services to their enrolled patients.

For those patients of Greymouth Family Health Centre who do not wish to be enrolled in a training practice, there will be the option of transferring to the Greymouth Medical Centre, Tainui Street practice instead.

The Greymouth Family Health Centre will close on Friday 10 September. For those patients who already have appointments booked at Greymouth Family Health Centre after 10th Sept, these appointments will now occur at the Rural Academic General Practice on the Grey Base Hospital site.
