Nurse Practitioner Appointed

Canadian Nurse Practitioner Friederike von Aweyden has been appointed to the newly created position of Nurse Practitioner at the Rural Academic General Practice at Grey Base Hospital.

West Coast DHB Acting Director of Nursing and Midwifery Karyn Kelly says this position is a first on the West Coast and pivotal in championing and supporting West Coast nurses on the pathway to becoming a Nurse Practitioner.

Having nurse practitioners on the Coast is one important aspect in the future direction of healthcare in the community for patients and helps balance the ongoing lack of general practitioners on the West Coast. The nurse practitioner role will be fundamental in developing the clinical health workforce of the future for the West Coast and New Zealand.

A Nurse Practitioner is a legal title for a nurse who has completed advanced education and training in a specific area. Nurse Practitioners have met Nursing Council of New Zealand requirements to assess, diagnose and manage health conditions.

Friederike has a Masters in Nursing from the University of Manitoba Canada and has been working as a Nurse Practitioner for the last five years in Winnipeg, Canada. She worked in community health for many years where her patients were a cross section of the local community including First Nation peoples.

Friederike will start work at the West Coast District Health Board in mid December 2010.
