Pike River Mine Incident

Two men from the Pike River Coal mine near Greymouth have arrived at Grey Base Hospital for treatment following an explosion at the mine late this afternoon.

The men, Russell Smith (50) and Daniel Rockhouse (24), have moderate injuries that are not considered life-threatening at this stage. Both men have been transferred to a hospital ward after initial treatment in the Emergency Department.

Grey Base Hospital received notice of the accident at 1645 hours this afternoon and activated its emergency response plan. The West Coast District Health Board is working with other emergency agencies and has support available from other District Health Boards and the Ministry of Health if required.
