Pike River Mine Incident - Update from Grey Base Hospital

Pike River Coal miners, Russell Smith (50) and Daniel Rockhouse (24), who both received moderate injuries after an explosion at the mine yesterday, have been discharged from Grey Base Hospital.

Dr Norman Sharpe, who treated the men, said both men were triaged in the emergency department before being admitted overnight to a hospital ward with concussion.

"The men had a comfortable night and had recovered well enough that they were discharged late this morning", says Dr Sharpe.

West Coast District Health Board, chief executive, David Meates, says, "The two miners have requested privacy. They have been through a traumatic time and need to focus on supporting the families and friends of their colleagues. They ask that the media respect their wishes.

"Staff at the West Coast District Health Board are prepared for a lot of different scenarios. They are taking the lead in providing medical help and are being supported by the Canterbury District Health Board, along with other DHBs and the Ministry of Health if required.

"The support the West Coast District Health Board has throughout this community is really evident with many local organisations offering help.

"West Coast District Health Board is working closely with Pike River Coal to ensure that any developments are communicated immediately and relevant emergency plans activated."

West Coast District Health Board chief executive David Meates will be available for comment at the Pike River press conference that will take place at 2pm today at the Greymouth Police Station, Guinness Street, Greymouth.
