Obstetric and Gynaecology Services at West Coast District Health Board

Due to unexpected illness, no specialist Obstetric & Gynaecology cover is available onsite at the West Coast DHB until the evening of Thursday 13 October 2011. Another DHB specialist was already absent on leave and unfortunately no locum cover has been able to be sourced despite extensive enquiries.

Women expected to birth over the next two days will be kept informed regarding the situation as it affects them.

Decisions whether individual patients may need to relocate to Christchurch will be made by those expectant mothers in consultation with their Lead Maternity Carers and Christchurch Women's Hospital.

Women due to give birth, who do not have any previous history indicating a higher than normal risk, will have the choice to plan on delivering on the West Coast as normal or travelling to Christchurch.

Our experienced team of midwives at McBrearty ward and our Emergency Department are mindful of this unforeseen situation and have managed this type of event previously. Lead Maternity Carers will have direct access to advice and support from Christchurch Women's Hospital during this time.

The transport services have been notified that we may have additional transfers due to this situation.
