Parfitt Kids - Making a child's time in hospital a little less stressful

The experience of having children in hospital has encouraged two Greymouth women to set up a trust to support children from across the West Coast who are admitted to Parfitt Children's Ward at the Grey Base Hospital.

Maria Swinburn and Amanda Hopkins together with paediatric Clinical Nurse Manager Dot O'Connor have set up Parfitt Kids which aims to make a positive difference to the health and well-being of children.

Both women know that a visit to hospital can be hard on children and their parents. Getting an age appropriate activity gift pack can lead to children settling more quickly in the ward, helping to reduce stress, anxiety and frustration and making the whole experience more pleasant for everyone.

Parfitt Kids has been set up as a registered charity and fundraising has commenced to meet the cost of the gift packs. To date there has been a fundraising raffle and the trust has been fortunate to get sponsorship from Oceana Gold and a member of the community is making weekly contributions. A quiz night is planned in the Copper Room of the Union Hotel on Saturday November 10 to help raise the necessary funding.

The gift packs will be given to children admitted to the children's ward from the middle of October.
