The West Coast Health System

West Coast DHB welcomes Government announcement to fast track plans for Grey Base Hospital

The West Coast District Health Board (DHB) has welcomed the Government's move to establish a Grey Base Hospital Redevelopment Partnership Group to finalise and fast track plans to redevelop Grey Base Hospital in Greymouth.

West Coast DHB chief executive, David Meates says, "This announcement is great news for the West Coast community. The Government's commitment to fast tracking and finalising plans to redevelop Grey Base Hospital is excellent news as we come to the end of what has been a difficult year for the Coast.

"The Grey Base Hospital does need to be fixed and we are pleased the Minister of Health is keen to see this happen as soon as possible.

"We are really looking forward to progressing the business case with urgency and to having it submitted by the end of April 2013. Our managers and clinicians will work alongside the Partnership Group to develop the business case, which will include more detailed plans for the design and function of the new hospital and integrated family health centre.

"I would like to acknowledge everyone who has been involved in the planning of the redevelopment work. Following community consultation up and down the Coast, our clinical and operational teams have developed new models of care which we are already implementing across the West Coast health system. Today's announcement confirms a commitment to keeping health services on the Coast, alongside the benefits of a transalpine approach supported by the Canterbury District Health Board.

"We look forward to being able to deliver health services on the Coast that are clinically and financially sustainable. The redevelopment of Grey Base Hospital is a critical part of that sustainability, which must also ultimately include addressing the need for viable health services in the Buller.

"We also acknowledge the assistance received from the National Health Board and the Government leading up to this point and look forward to presenting the business case to the Crown at the end of April," says David Meates.
