About this facility

McBrearty Ward is situated in Grey Base Hospital and currently has two birthing rooms, one birthing pool and five antenatal / postnatal bedrooms.

Before coming into hospital, please notify your LMC midwife who will arrange your admission.

Partners Staying Overnight

In some circumstances partners may be permitted to stay in the unit overnight. However, this is dependent upon resources available in the unit at the time and is at the discretion of the manager of the unit.

Visiting Hours

McBrearty Ward offers flexible visiting hours to meet the needs of you and your family / whānau.  ‘Do not disturb signs – Mothers sleeping’ are provided for rest times and visitors are requested to leave a message at reception.

To allow Mums and babies their much needed rest, there is no visiting between the hours of 1.00 pm and 3.00 pm daily.

Children are welcome during visiting hours, but require adult supervision.  There is a limited supply of toys on the ward. 

There are no en suite facilities available within the ward.  Toilets and showers are for your use only.  Please advise your visitors to use the public toilet located outside McBrearty ward in the main corridor. 

If any of your family / whanau / friends have colds, flu or infections, please ask them to stay away until they are medically clear.  Hand sanitiser is provided at the beginning of the ward and in the rooms.  Please request your family and all staff use this before and after touching you and your baby. 


No wifi is available at Grey Base Hospital for internet access to smart phone and other internet devices; therefore you will need to bring your own t-stick.

McBrearty Ward has a portable phone available to make local calls and your family / whanau can call you on this number:  (03) 769-7598.

A card payphone is provided in the main corridor on the ground floor opposite the entrance to Hannan Ward. 

Although there are no televisions in any of the bedrooms, McBrearty Ward lounge has a television equipped with Freeview to air. 

The Grey Star has a newspaper stand adjacent to the main entrance, Grey Base Hospital. The Christchurch Press can be purchased from Vibe Café. The News (Westport paper) can be purchased from main reception, Grey Base Hospital.

Access to McBrearty Ward after hours

To access between 8.30 pm and 6.00 am, enter the front doors of the main entrance to Grey Base Hospital.  On the right hand side there is a red phone which will connect you directly to the front desk receptionist.  The receptionist will open the doors and phone McBrearty Ward to inform them of your arrival.  If you require assistance, an orderly or McBrearty staff member will escort you.

All main entrances to Grey Base Hospital are locked from 8.30 pm until 6.00 am. Security and CCTV cameras monitor the building for your safety.

Access to clinical records

WCDHB maintains a record of you and your baby’s daily progress whilst in hospital.  To request a copy of your clinical records please contact the Medical Records Department who will send you the appropriate documentation.

Dietary Requirements

During your stay in McBrearty Ward you will be provided with daily meal options, however if you have any special dietary requirements (e.g. diabetes, gluten free, vegetarian, etc) please inform your LMC or McBrearty staff on admission.

Basic kitchen facilities are provided on the ward for tea, coffee, milo and snacks (bread, jam, cheese and crackers).  You and your partner are welcome to use these facilities during your stay.

Food and Snacks

Vibe Café on the ground floor of Grey Base Hospital is open Monday to Friday from 6.30 am til 4.00 pm and weekends 8.30 am til 3.00 pm.  Vibe provides a combination of hot and cold food options. 

Located opposite the main reception area of Grey Base Hospital, a vending machine is provided for snacks and cold beverages.

Whakaruru Hōu Whānau House

Whakaruru Hou Whanau House

If you reside outside of the Grey district, the Whakaruru Hōu Whānau House is located on the Greymouth Hospital site and provides accommodation for family / whānau.  However, the Whānau House operates on a first come, first serve basis and accommodation is provided for a short term basis only.  Please discuss with your LMC if your family / whanau would like to access this accommodation so it can be arranged through the social work department.

Chapel / Chaplaincy

A hospital chaplain and / or Kaiawhina are available to visit you during your stay.  Alternatively, you can arrange for your preferred cleric visit you in the ward – please advise staff. 

Greymouth Hospital - Chapel

The hospital chapel is situated on the ground floor at the north end of the corridor, near Parfitt Ward.  Please feel free to make use of this chapel during your stay.  Religious services are provided; please advise staff if you would like to attend.

Emergency Procedures

McBrearty Ward staff will guide you and your family / whanau in the event of an emergency or the fire alarms sounding.
